A power wheelchair has the potential to provide a client with independent mobility to increase independence with activities of daily living across various environments. One of the key selections the client and team of professionals involved in the provision process of a power wheelchair must make is the selection of the wheelchair base. In order to make the most appropriate choice to meet a client's specific needs, it is essential to have an understanding of the various technology and components that comprise a power wheelchair base. This educational seminar will provide participants with the opportunity to examine various aspects of power wheelchair bases such as drive wheel position, suspension, caster wheels, overall footprint, etc. Discussions will also include the potential benefits of each, areas of consideration, and examples of clinical applications

Course Description:

A power wheelchair has the potential to provide a client with independent mobility to increase independence with activities of daily living across various environments. One of the key selections the client and team of professionals involved in the provision process of a power wheelchair must make is the selection of the wheelchair base. In order to make the most appropriate choice to meet a client's specific needs, it is essential to have an understanding of the various technology and components that comprise a power wheelchair base. This educational seminar will provide participants with the opportunity to examine various aspects of power wheelchair bases such as drive wheel position, suspension, caster wheels, overall footprint, etc. Discussions will also include the potential benefits of each, areas of consideration, and examples of clinical applications

Course Objectives:

  1. At the conclusion of this educational session, participants will be able to justify why a client who is dependent for mobility would need a power wheelchair as opposed to a power operated vehicle.
  2. At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to propose three critical components to include in the interview and/or hands-on portion of the seating and wheeled mobility evaluation to specifically help with the selection of the power wheelchair base.
  3. Upon completion of this educational session, participants will be able to compare and contrast the three different types of drive wheel configurations (front-wheel, mid-wheel, and rear-wheel).
  4. Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to articulate the importance of suspension and defend the clinical reasons as to why suspension should be included on a power wheelchair base.

Target Audience:

Occupational Therapists, Occupational Therapy Assistants, Physical Therapists, Physical Therapy Assistants, Assistive Technology Professionals, and Complex Rehabilitation Technology Suppliers.

Agenda:

20 minutes – Review of potential barriers and groups of wheelchairs

30 minutes – Evaluation considerations

40 minutes – Drive wheel and electronic selection

30 minutes – Additional Considerations and Wrap-up

Continuing Competency Information:

  • Number of credits earned - 2 hours or .2 CEUs
  • International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET) approved.
  • ProCert, a program of the Federation of State Board of Physical Therapy (FSBPT), approved.
  • Ensuring approval with local state boards or other entities for CEUs is the responsibility of the individual.  
  • In order to earn the credits for this event participants must:
    • Complete the official registration.
    • Sign-in and out of the event.
    • Attend the entire event.
    • Complete and pass a posttest with a passing score of at least 80%.

Requests for refunds must submitted via email to [email protected] at least 14 days prior to the scheduled event. Considerations for refunds submitted after that date will be made on a case-by-case basis.

Cancelation Policy:

Sunrise Medical reserves the right to cancel an event due to low registration or unforeseen circumstances. Should an event need to be canceled, all attempts will be made to do so at least 14 days prior to the event and complete refunds will be issued to registered attendees.
