There is a great deal of POWER in independent mobility. In order for some individuals to be able to experience independent mobility they require the use of power mobility. During this one hour educational session participants will be introduced to power wheelchairs. Concepts that will be reviewed include the potential clinical application for power wheelchairs, a brief overview of the evaluation process, and an introduction to various components of power wheelchairs.

Course Description:

Concepts that will be reviewed include the potential clinical application for power wheelchairs, a brief overview of the evaluation process, and an introduction to various components of power wheelchairs.

Course Objectives:

  1. Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to compare and contrast rear wheel drive, mid-wheel, and rear wheel drive power wheelchair bases in relation to maneuverability.
  2. After participation in this course, participants will be able to propose three justifications for why a client with a neuromuscular disease would need power seating functions including tilt, recline, and elevating leg supports.
  3. Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to distinguish between when it is appropriate to recommend a power wheelchair with expandable electronics as opposed to non-expandable electronics.

Occupational Therapists, Occupational Therapy Assistants, Physical Therapists, Physical Therapy Assistants, Assistive Technology Professionals, and Complex Rehabilitation Technology Suppliers.

Continuing Competency Information:

  • Number of credits earned - 1 hour or .1 CEUs
  • International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET) approved.
  • ProCert, a program of the Federation of State Board of Physical Therapy (FSBPT), approved.
  • Ensuring approval with local state boards or other entities for CEUs is the responsibility of the individual.  
  • In order to earn the credits for this event participants must:
    • Complete the official registration.

    • Complete and pass a posttest with a passing score of at least 80%.  

Instructor:

Angie Kiger, M.Ed., CTRS, ATP/SMS

Angie is the Clinical Strategy and Education Manager for Sunrise Medical US.  She earned a Master of Education degree in Assistive Technology from George Mason University. Angie is an Assistive Technology Professional (ATP), Seating and Mobility Specialist (SMS), and a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS). 

Angie has over 18 years of experience working in the field of assistive technology. Prior to joining the Sunrise Medical team in 2012, she worked with infants, children, and adults in both inpatient and outpatient settings. In addition to working as a clinician, Angie has served as an adjunct instructor at George Mason University and presented at numerous industry conferences in the US and abroad. She has written articles for trade publications and serves as a member of Mobility Management magazine’s Editorial Advisory Board.
