From the moment a child is born the responsibilities listed in his/her job description simply read grow, play, learn, and explore. During one hour session participants will learn about a variety of seating and wheeled mobility equipment that is available to pediatric clients and strategies for deciding whether a child is appropriate for a dependent or independent device. In addition recommendations for developing a plan for completing the wheelchair provision process from evaluation to follow-up for children under the age of 21 will be provided. Techniques for encouraging caregivers to pursue obtaining appropriate equipment for their children will also be discussed.

Course Description:

From the moment a child is born the responsibilities listed in his/her job description simply read grow, play, learn, and explore.  During one hour session participants will learn about a variety of seating and wheeled mobility equipment that is available to pediatric clients and strategies for deciding whether a child is appropriate for a dependent or independent device.  In addition recommendations for developing a plan for completing the wheelchair provision process from evaluation to follow-up for children under the age of 21 will be provided. Techniques for encouraging caregivers to pursue obtaining appropriate equipment for their children will also be discussed.

Course Objectives:

  1. Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to list three reasons as to why providing young children (0-5 years of age) with impaired motor skills equipment to facilitate seating and mobility are important for overall growth and development. 
  2. At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to formulate a plan for the wheelchair provision process of a pediatric (under the age of 21) client with mobility impairments secondary diagnoses such as neuromuscular disorders.
  3. At the completion of this course, participants will be able to propose three ways in which growth can be accommodated in a pediatric wheeled mobility device (dependent or independent).

Occupational Therapists, Occupational Therapy Assistants, Physical Therapists, Physical Therapy Assistants, Assistive Technology Professionals, and Complex Rehabilitation Technology Suppliers.

10 minutes – Review of Growth and Development Related to Wheeled Mobility

10 minutes – Evaluation Process and Age-Related Considerations

40 minutes – Seating Equipment and Mobility Bases

Continuing Competency Information:

  • Number of credits earned - 1 hour or .1 CEUs
  • International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET) approved.
  • ProCert, a program of the Federation of State Board of Physical Therapy (FSBPT), approved.
  • Ensuring approval with local state boards or other entities for CEUs is the responsibility of the individual.  
  • In order to earn the credits for this event participants must:
    • Complete the official registration.
    • Participate in the entire webinar.
    • Complete and pass a posttest with a passing score of at least 80%.
