Understanding the relationship between human biomechanics, seating shapes and materials is essential for the most successful outcomes for clients with mobilty needs. This one-hour session will review the key factors in posture, skin integrity and function and how to provide seating technology to meet those needs.

Understanding the relationship between human biomechanics, seating shapes and materials is essential for the most successful outcomes for clients with mobilty needs. This one-hour session will review the key factors in posture, skin integrity and function and how to provide seating technology to meet those needs.

Objectives:

  1. At the conclusion of this educational session, participants will identify the four major factors in skin breakdown and how to approach them in clinical decision making. 
  2. At the end of this educational session, participants will articulate at least one advantage and disadvantage of the most common wheelchair seating cushion materials. 
  3. When this session is complete, participants will be able to describe the seating factors for pelvic and spinal postural asymmetries in sitting.

Presenter:

Faith Brown, OT, is currently the Clinical Specialist for Sunrise Medical United Kingdom & Ireland. She has 19 years of international experience in the field of seating and mobility including an extensive career in the British National Health Service, as well as the private and not-for-profit sectors. Faith is an HCPC registered Occupational Therapist with a postgraduate certificate in Postural Management for People with Complex Disabilities from Oxford Brookes University. She is a member of PMG (Posture and Mobility Group).
