Seating & Positioning

This session will review assessment criteria required for recommendation of a successful ultra-light rigid wheelchair (K0005). Key measurements as well as functional considerations help to determine optimal configuration pertaining to the frame dimensions and wheel placement. We will follow a rider through the evaluation and procurement process from start to finish to demonstrate optimal configuration for best functional outcomes.

This one-hour session provides an overview of how tilt wheelchairs can be used to enhance pressure distribution, posture, function, and participation. It will discuss desicion making criteria to determine why a speific tilt base would be chosen and what angles could be used to meet goals.

1-hour live presentation discussing evidence related to outcome measures used to assess back supports that provide support to the spinal curves

This course includes analysis of factors affecting a wheelchair user’s stability and structural foundation in sitting, and the functional impact of the support surface.  We will examine postural presentations and the body’s tendency to assume asymmetry from rest to functional reach. The session will also explore properties of familiar support surfaces and related considerations during a seating assessment.  Finally, learn how orthotic and prosthetic principles provide a foundation of stability and how customized support can meet the needs of each individual.

Proper head positioning is important for many reasons. From improving breathing, visual field, and heart rate to name a few; the benefits of good head positioning go far beyond aesthetics. The head support is not an accessory, it is a fundamental part of the positioning system. During this session, participants will be able to learn clinical strategies that will help them find the most functional positioning of the head in their patients. In addition, they will be introduced to a variety of head support available in today's market, the purpose and the clinical application for each option presented.

The primary support surfaces are back supports and seat cushions. Characteristics of the supports as well as the purpose of the intervention of the seat cushions and back supports will be presented.
