Proper head positioning is important for many reasons. From improving breathing, visual field, and heart rate to name a few; the benefits of good head positioning go far beyond aesthetics. The head support is not an accessory, it is a fundamental part of the positioning system. During this session, participants will be able to learn clinical strategies that will help them find the most functional positioning of the head in their patients. In addition, they will be introduced to a variety of head support available in today's market, the purpose and the clinical application for each option presented.

The head support is not an accessory, it is a fundamental part of the positioning system. During this session, participants will be able to learn clinical strategies that will help them find the most functional positioning of the head in their patients. In addition, they will be introduced to a variety of head support available in today's market, the purpose and the clinical application for each option presented.

Objectives:

  1. At the end of this session, participants will be able to list three key steps during the clinical evaluation to accomplish the best possible head position for their clients. 
  2. Upon completion of this educational session, participants will be able to identify at least three anatomical areas they can use to support the head and three areas that need to be avoided. 
  3. At the conclusion of this session, attendees will be able to describe at least three different types of head support available in the market and their clinical application.

Presenter:

Mayarí (Maya) Solorzano, PT, ATP/SMS, is the Clinical Educator for Sunrise Medical Latin America. She has been with Sunrise Medical since May of 2014. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Therapy in 2006 from the University of Costa Rica. She worked five years for one of the biggest distributors of medical equipment Costa Rica ordering and delivering complex rehab products. In 2011, Maya moved to the United States and obtained her Assistive Technology Professional (ATP) certification from the Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America (RESNA). Maya earned her Seating and Mobility Specialist (SMS) credentials in 2019 from RESNA. During her career with Sunrise, she has had the opportunity to deliver clinical sessions to physicians, PTs, and OTs in Brazil, Argentina, Costa Rica, Colombia, Uruguay, and other countries in the region in their own language.
